Microsoft and Samsung have shown a video demonstration of the “holodeck” technology they filed a patent application for back in September. The video depicts a projection system that brings the image beyond the edges of the television, turning entire walls into a television, or adding decorative borders for a music game. Attendees at the press conference were assured that the video is an actual demonstration of a working lab prototype, and not something cooked up in a Hollywood VFX house.

With a combination of PICO projectors, and Microsoft’s existing 3D scanning functionality from Kinect, such a thing certainly seems plausible, but how long it will take to have something that consumers can afford is anyone’s guess. Either way, there’s no question that the technology is very cool, and certainly could lead to some holodeck-esque experiences in the future. It’ll be interesting to see how this evolves into a reality, probably a year or two from now when Microsoft’s next console has emerged from its launch window
