The Hobbit Makes an Expected Journey to Blu-ray in April

Solicitations, with prices, have started popping up on European branches of Amazon for one of the most anticipated Blu-ray releases this year: the first part of Peter Jackson’s new Hobbit trilogy.

Given hat the EU region  is notoriously for (reliably) leaking street dates, combined with the fact that these solicitations carry actual prices with them, it’s a safe bet that the first Blu-ray release of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey will likely hit April 16 or thereabouts. This will, of course, be the theatrical cut, which will be followed by an Extended Edition in time for Christmas with more bells and whistles and probably better bonus material (so no complaining about double-dips, you were warned a decade ago!). The German release (pictured) has an amazing cover, but I’m still hoping for a Steelbook of the teaser poster art.

While a 1080p 48fps version is not possible with current Blu-ray technology, if the theatrical presentation is any indication, the 24fps 3D should be great (it was actually superior experience to the HFR version in my opinion). The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey will be followed in December by The Desolation of Smaug, followed by There and Back Again in the summer of 2014.
