Although previous signs pointed to an April release for the theatrical cut of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey on Blu-ray, we now have official word that the disc will debut on March 19, in both 2D and 3D versions, carrying an extras package that is the peer of the Lord of the Rings‘ theatrical versions. An extended edition is expected in time for Christmas with the kind of extras we came to expect from the deluxe releases of the original trilogy, so fair warning is now in effect. The features for the initial combo packs include:

New Zealand: Home of Middle Earth
Video Blogs
Start of Production
Location Scouting
Shooting Block One
Filming in 3D
Locations Part 1
Locations Part 2
Stone St. Studios Tour
Wrap of Principal Photography
Post-production Overview
Wellington World Premiere
Theatrical Trailers
Letter Opener
Bilbo Contract
Gandalf Wagers
Gollum Paths
Game Trailers
The Hobbit: Kingdoms of Middle-Earth
Guardians of Middle-Earth
Lego The Lord of the Rings
Standard DVD copy of An Unexpected Journey (2D)
UltraViolet digital copy An Unexpected Journey (2D)

Like LotR before it, most of these extras were available as the film’s online production diaries, but that in no way makes them lackluster. For those that want it now, don’t care about extras, or felt the theatrical cut was long enough, your wait is almost over. The 2D and 3D combo packs are priced at $29.99/$34.99 respectively.
