Lutron RadioRa 2 SecurityIn the second installment of my Control4/Lutron RadioRa 2 review, I touched on the ways in which the integration of lighting with security features enhances my own lifestyle. If that aspect appealed to you more than the home theater and entertainment aspects covered in Part 1, you’ll definitely dig the fact that Lutron now features full integration capabilities with advanced home security systems in and of itself, without the assistance of separate home automation system.

Lutron has announced that it will be demonstrating its new security integration solutions at next month’s ISC West tradeshow, which runs from April 10-12, 2013, in Las Vegas. During the show, Lutron representatives will be hosting fifteen-minute, in-booth training sessions on integrating RadioRa 2 with security systems from, DSC, Elk, HAI, and Honeywell, so if you already have a monitored security system, chances are good that your brand of choice is covered. Lutron will also be giving away a RadioRa 2 starter solution package at the end of every session.

So, what does the integration of security and lighting mean for you, the homeowner? Lutron’s director of residential product management and business development Rich Black hints at the capabilities in the press release:

…not only can lights and shades provide visual alerts during an intrusion, but combining light, shade, and temperature control adds energy and convenience benefits that they will enjoy every day.

You could also, for example, program a fire alarm to flash the lights on the exterior of your house, to give arriving firemen an immediate visual clue to your location. An “Away” lighting scene could also be tied to your security panel, so when you arm the system and head out the door, all of your lights automatically turn off. And with Lutron’s new cloud integration, you’ll be able to disarm your alarm — and illuminate your abode — from your car when you arrive home after dark.
