If you visit Disney Hollywood (formerly MGM) Studios this summer, you’ll have an awesome opportunity to make yourself a unique Star Wars collectible: yourself! That’s right: last year’s custom carbonite action figures have returned, and Disney has added a new collectible action figure based on you: you can now put your head on a Stormtrooper action figure.
After making an appointment, and putting down a deposit, you can visit the 3D scanning studio inside the theme park and have your head scanned. Two months later, you’ll get either your custom stormtrooper or frozen in carbonite figure in the mail:
The 10-minute experience uses the world’s highest-resolution, single-shot 3D face scanner created by our Imagineering scientists with Disney Research labs. That captured image is later sent to a high resolution 3D printer to create the figurine. The completed figurine will arrive within 7-8 weeks after the experience if shipping domestically (it takes a little longer if shipping internationally). Guests will also receive either a Carbon-Freeze Me light-up band or a collector button depending upon which option they choose.
3D printing is an exciting new technology that can be used for everything from guns to kidneys. In the future, it’s going to be a huge part of our lives, especially when it comes to keeping your gear running. Instead of having to stock a thousand different washers for a thousand different cars, a single 3D printer can just use a CAD file to spit it out for you in no time at all, reducing inventory costs, and keeping your stuff repairable years past when it would be today, preserving it as well as carbonite, without resorting to perfect hibernation.
A friend of mine got his head scanned and a 3D bust of himself as a Jedi made at the original Star Wars celebration, and it turned out pretty well. Having your own custom Stormtrooper or carbonite figure is a pretty awesome keepsake for the Star Wars fan in your life, so if your vacation takes you to Orlando this year, you might want to take advantage of this deal, assuming it’s not altered any further.
Timing on this one is critical, though. You can only get a carbonite or Stormtrooper you made during Star Wars Weekends 2013 (May 17 – 19, May 24 – 26, May 31 – June 2, and June 7 – 9).
