Sennheiser MOMENTUM On-Ear headphonesSennheiser has announced a dashing new addition to its headphone lineup: an on-ear version of its gorgeous MOMENTUM over-ear cans, complete with a slimmer new look and a broader range of color palettes. The new MOMENTUM On-Ear comes with your choice of blue, green, pink, or ivory headbands and cups, each accented by stainless steel accents and a synthetic material produced in Italy called Alcantara, which promises to deliver the utmost in softness, durability, and “breathable comfort.”

Tech specs for the MOMENTUM On-Ear headphone stack up quite nicely with its bigger over-ear brother, with a frequency response of 16–22,000 Hz, 18Ω impedance, and a load rating of 200 mW, so these beauties should be quite easy to drive with your favorite portable device. The package also includes two cables — one a 3.5 mm low profile angled plug; the other a 3.5 mm straight plug — and with the low-profile plug you’ll also get integrated iPod/iPhone controls and a mic. With a weight of just 160g (about a third of a pound), the MOMENTUM On-Ear should also be comfortable on the noggin.

My only concern is a note in the press release about “slight bass emphasis,” but it’s difficult to sell a headphone in today’s market without a bit of extra bottom end, so it’s hard to fault Sennheiser for that.

The new Sennheiser MOMENTUM On-Ear will be available via retailers sometime this summer. No MSRP is given for the US market, but given the £169.99 price tag in the UK, I’m going to go out on a limb and guess somewhere in the $199 range.
