Sorry peeps- but I come into this with prejudice. My first car audio amplifier was an Orion Cobalt series. I am thrilled that the new keepers of the Orion flame have resurrected and revamped the Cobalt series. However, Cobalt is an entry-level brand, and once you move up in the world of car audio, there is no bigger threat at a soundoff than seeing a half-dozen flame red anodized heat sinks as long as a diving board. Yet, sometimes only boasting small output number- but that is never the case… Enter the world of the Orion HCCA killer series of amps and subs. But for today, let’s discuss subs that strike fear into the hearts of innocent bystanders without emptying your wallet.
Recently, MD Audio, the people behind the Orion brand came up with a woofer design that can take punishing abuse. Yet, not break the bank. However, should the woofer ever fail during SPL competition, it is rebuild-able in the field. We checked in with Edgar Cedeno, the Sales Manager for MD Audio about the innovation behind the new XTR Pro woofers. It will be available in 10”, 12” or 15” in dual 2-Ohm or 4-Ohm voicecoils. Cedeno notes: “With no doubt the new Orion XTR PRO woofer is a total innovation. It handles the most power yet remains composed through the latest innovation used in its creation. The customer gets this at a great price. The XTR PRO woofer has inherited the true passion of Orion Car Audio. From the beginning of time Orion has been considered a brand of high prestige and true power in the industry. So thinking back in the philosophies of our brand from the beginning we have created this powerful sub.”
It features a new aluminum basket that keeps it relatively light yet durable, and a Dual Interlaced Conex spider with stitched and looped tinsel leads attached. Orion has also added to the XTR PRO a recone kit system, very similar to the top-of-the-line HCCA series woofer. That will allow the replacement of the pieces with no difficulties and very easily in case the customer requires it.
