The next Ferrari supercar– codenamed, confusingly enough, F150– will likely be a hybrid. On top of that shocker, it’ll make (are you ready for this?) 950 horsepower to help it reach an estimated top speed of 230 MPH.
According to Car and Driver, the new car is being groomed as a replacement for Ferrari’s Enzo supercar and will feature a HyKers V12 engine mounted amidships with a hybridized transaxle driving the rear wheels. Mounted atop the transmission is the hybrid power unit, and at the rear of the gearbox is an electric motor. The transmission itself is expected to be Ferrari’s existing 7-speed dual-clutch automatic.
C&D said the electric motor is responsible for not only boosting the output of the V12, but also for recapturing energy under deceleration. In a setup similar to GM’s mild hybrid eAssist system, the front generator acts as a clutched alternator of sorts and can decouple under hard acceleration to reduce driveline drag.
The engine is expected to make roughly 800 horsepower on its own, with the electric bits providing an extra 150 horsepower, and all in a car that C&D expects will weigh well under 3,000 lbs. That could help the car get to 60 MPH from a dead stop in less than three seconds and propel it to that 230 MPH top speed, the magazine posited. If that holds true, C&D said it would be the fastest road-going Ferrari ever produced.
The reveal of the Enzo successor has been slow, and has even featured a traipse into the weeds of copyright law when Ford objected to the proposed F150 code name back in 2011. Its official “on-sale” name has yet to be released– or perhaps even decided by the folks at Ferrari who are in charge of the matter. No matter what they choose to call this monster, one thing’s certain: The speed and technology it brings won’t come cheap.
