Jay BlakeIn Car Tech is not usually the place you’ll find coverage of racing events.  Not that we do not enjoy a good race every once in awhile.  But I got this press release from Permatex about the success of its Follow a Dream racing team.  If left up to the release, you would think that Jay just sounds like a good hard working crew chief working hard.  Unless you knew that he has to work harder than most.  Jay is blind.  In 1997, a truck wheel and tire he was working on exploded in his face, sending him 15 feet up into the air, fracturing his face, and blinding him.  As he was being rehabilitated, he was asked what his dream job would be.  He said ‘Race Car Crew Chief.’  And some wonderful people helped him achieve that goal.  But mostly it was Jay himself learning how to do everything by feel.  He knows how his alcohol engine is performing just by hearing, smelling, and touching the exhaust outlets.    He can tear down the engine with blistering speed and he does not need a blindfold, as the joke may go….

Jay’s story is just truly inspirational.  We wish him continued success.

Permatex Follow A Dream Team Poised For Championship Repeat

– Ranked 4th nationally, the team has four races left in 2013 NHRA schedule –

Hartford, CT… The Permatex/Follow A Dream Race Team, sponsored by Permatex, an innovative leader in chemical technology for automotive maintenance and repair, is in the home stretch of the grueling 2013 NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series. Ranked in 4th place nationally, the team remains focused on moving further up in the standings and bringing home the 2013 Lucas Oil East Region Champion title to complement its 2012 Championship.

Competing in Region 1 of the Top Alcohol Funny Car NHRA Series, the team has enjoyed a good run. The crew is very optimistic for the balance of the season and looks forward to extending the team’s recent run of podium finishes into the remaining four races. Led by crew chief Jay Blake and driver Todd Veney, the Permatex/Follow A Dream Race Team is coming off a final-four finish at their home track, the New England Dragway in Epping, New Hampshire.

“Not a bad weekend,” Veney said. “We’re there to win, but any time you make it to the semifinals, you’re doing pretty well. We ran three 5.73s in a row in some pretty tough conditions. It just wasn’t enough to get around (reigning world champ) Frank Manzo.”

The team has four events remaining on their 2013 schedule.

  • August 16th – 17th: Lucas Oil East Regional – Cecil County Dragway, Rising Sun, MD
  • August 30th – September 2nd: NHRA U.S. Nationals – O’Reilly Raceway Park, Indianapolis, IN
  • September 13th – 15th: NHRA Nationals – zMAX Dragway, Concord, NC
  • October 4th – 6th: Auto-Plus NHRA Nationals – Maple Grove Raceway, Mohnton, PA
