Who is getting the “aftermarket” Apple CarPlay first? I bet the farm on the Mercedes CLA.

If it looks like an aftermarket screen, and acts like an aftermarket screen, it might just work with aftermarket Apple equipment!

A recent news story confirmed that Apple CarPlay will be coming to Mercedes dealers as most likely an overpriced add-on for older models. Older most likely meaning the new CLA.

It’s already in the PR photos! After all, the touch screen already looks like an aftermarket piece that has been grafted onto the dashboard, and as Car & Driver so eloquently put it, “Like it was installed by your cousin who works at Mickey Shorr.” But sorry, current C Class owners. That infotainment system is a dinosaur, and Mercedes is waiting to bring out the big tech guns with the 2015 redesign.

Some good news is that even though Mercedes dealers may get the ‘aftermarket’ technology, typically the true 12-volt aftermarket can keep you away from the overpriced parts department at your dealership. But you still have to be tethered.  Oh Hell No!

According to 9to5 Mac, “We’ve confirmed that at least Mercedes-Benz is looking into aftermarket installations of CarPlay that will allow older models of vehicles to access the feature. The company confirmed that it is trying to get an ‘an after-market solution for previous cars’ and hopes to have it on the market by the end of the year. While there is no info yet on how the aftermarket installation would work, we’d imagine it will be a dealer installed accessory for select older models like Honda and others already offer for Apple’s Siri Eyes Free feature.”
