GM Leak Reveals Possible Turbo Engines for Buick Verano

Leaks like this are usually hard to come by, but a GM document outlining VIN numbering schemes for future models may have inadvertently let the cat out of the bag on turbocharged engines in the Buick Verano’s future.

According to Motor Trend, the source document was “likely published to help dealers and technicians understand and decode future VIN numbers.” The MT folks said the page for the 2014 Buick Verano included a VIN code for a 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine. The engine might very well replace the current base 2.4-liter four-cylinder naturally aspirated engine, the magazine said, though it was not clear if indeed that was the plan based solely on the document.

The 1.6-liter turbocharged engine would feature direct fuel injection and variable valve timing, reportedly. The engine could be based on a current GM powerplant, perhaps an upsized-displacement version of the 1.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder found in some versions of  the Chevrolet Sonic and Cruze, the magazine hypothesized.

Other engine news found in the leaked document:

  • GM’s eAssist mild hybrid technology could make its way to the 2014 Chevrolet Equinox/GMC Terrain twins in the form of the 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine previously seen in other GM eAssist models.
  • The Chevrolet Camaro appears to be in line to get a whopping 7.0-liter LS7 V8 engine. Based on the output of this same engine in the Chevrolet Corvette Z06, it may make more than 500 horsepower and just shy of 500 ft-lbs. of torque, Motor Trend said. It is unclear at this time what Camaro this hot-rod mill was destined for, though the magazine suspected perhaps it was headed under the hood of a long-rumored Z28 variant. That would put it between the relatively pedestrian Camaro SS everyman’s V8 pony car and the ultrapony Camaro ZL-1 at the top of the range.

  1. This car was already on my short list, waiting for an upgrade to the 2.5 but this is an even better surprise. Not quite midsize, quiet, now with a great engine choice without the highest cost of the top of the line turbo model…Oh and still no CVT’s :)
