VW texts moviegoers in anti-texting while driving message

When it comes to driver distraction, all of the automakers want to see it banished — except when they don’t.

They want good Polk scores on their infotainment systems for the feature set, and sometimes safety comes last. No one mentions digging through two or three sub-menus to view the odometer or switch to AM radio.

I’ll give it up for VW for creating this powerful statement about texting while driving. The scenario is a movie theater. During the trailer, VW apparently has access to some magical VAG-COM software that can not only change the incessant beeping of the ignition switch, but also somehow hot-rod cellphones in Hong Kong and give them the ability to accept an incoming text message from a stranger.  There must have been some opt-in we are not seeing, like $20, or a free small popcorn — which is probably parity in Hong Kong!

In any event, this was a pretty cool Madison Avenue-style idea by way of Hollywood by way of Hong Kong to help reduce a terrible problem on our roads today: texting while driving. Video below:
